Under Québec's Law 25 and PIPEDA, a building that records common areas is collecting personal information. That means clear signage at entrances, a defined purpose and retention period, restricted access to footage, and a named person responsible for privacy. Do we need signage if we install cameras?

Yes. Signage at entrances telling people that the area is under video surveillance, and why, is a basic requirement under Québec and federal privacy law.

Can residents open the door and the garage from their phone?

How long should we keep footage?

Long enough to investigate an incident and no longer. Many buildings use around 30 days; the board sets the retention policy and the recorder enforces it.
