PTZ security cameras: how to choose the right one for your site

PTZ security cameras: pan, tilt and zoom to cover large areas and zoom in on detail

James Iacuessa |

A PTZ camera pans left and right, tilts up and down, and zooms. That lets one camera cover a whole parking lot, yard or perimeter, then zoom in close enough to read a licence plate or see a face.

It's the right tool for large open areas and for sites where someone watches live. It isn't a replacement for fixed cameras, though: a PTZ can only look one way at a time.

Here's when a PTZ is worth it, how to read the spec sheet in plain English, which type fits which site, and what Canadian winters change.

PTZ vs fixed cameras

When a PTZ is the right tool

  • Large open areas. Parking lots, storage yards, campuses, construction sites and fence lines, where fixed cameras would need a dozen positions.
  • Someone watches live. A guard or operator can swing to an incident and zoom in while it's happening.
  • Following a target. Many PTZs can track a person or vehicle automatically as it crosses the scene.
  • Detail at a distance. Reading a plate at the far end of a lot, or seeing a face across a loading yard.

When it isn't

  • Doorways, counters and hallways. A fixed camera records the same view every second, which is what you want as evidence at a fixed point.
  • Nobody watching and no tracking set up. An unattended PTZ may be pointed the other way when something happens.

The answer is usually both

The strongest setups pair them. Fixed cameras cover entrances and key points all the time, and a PTZ adds reach and zoom over the open areas. If you want a single unit that never loses the overview, a TandemVu camera combines a wide-view camera and a PTZ in one housing.

Reading a PTZ spec sheet

  • Optical zoom (25X, 42X). This is the number to compare. Digital zoom only crops the image, so ignore it. As a rough guide: around 4X for a small area, 25X for a typical parking lot, and 32X to 42X for long fence lines and large yards.
  • Housing size (2 to 9 inches). Bigger housings hold longer lenses, stronger infrared, heaters and wipers. They also need more power.
  • Resolution (2 MP to 8 MP / 4K). More pixels help when you crop or record the wide view. For most sites, 4 MP is the sweet spot.
  • Night vision. Check the infrared (IR) range. The 4-inch DS-2DE4A425IWG-E reaches up to 50 m at night; 8-inch 42X DarkFighter models reach 400 to 500 m. ColorVu models use white light instead, so night footage stays in colour.
  • Smart detection. AcuSense models tell people and vehicles apart, which cuts false alarms from headlights, rain and animals.
  • Auto-tracking, presets and patrols. Presets are saved positions; a patrol tours them on a schedule. Larger speed domes store hundreds of presets, and many models can track a moving target on their own.
  • Weather and vandal ratings. IP66 or IP67 means sealed against rain and dust. IK10 means it can take a hit.

Mini PTZ and PT domes

Compact cameras for smaller spaces: a shop floor, a lobby, a small lot. The DS-2DE2A404IW-DE3(S6) is a 4 MP mini PTZ with 4X zoom. The DS-2DE3A400BW-DE(T5) is a pan-tilt (PT) dome: it turns but doesn't zoom, and records in colour at night.

Speed domes: the workhorses

The classic PTZ, sized by housing and zoom:

For long perimeters and very large yards, ask us about 8-inch models with 42X zoom.

TandemVu: overview and zoom in one

A wide-view camera and a PTZ in one unit, so you keep the full picture while zooming in. The DS-2SE4C425MWG-E/26(F0) pairs a 6 MP overview with a 4 MP, 25X PTZ. See all TandemVu cameras.

Solar and 4G PTZ kits

For sites with no power or network, like construction sites, farms and remote gates, solar-powered PTZ kits with a 4G connection do the job without trenching a single cable. Some portable 4G models also read licence plates, for temporary sites. See solar-powered cameras, or ask us what's available.

Thermal PTZ

Bi-spectrum PTZs combine a thermal camera with a regular one, so they see people and vehicles in total darkness, fog or smoke. They're built for perimeters. See thermal cameras.

Analog PTZ

For sites wired with coax, analog speed domes work on the existing cable, so you can add zoom without rewiring. See analog PTZ cameras.

Canadian winters and installation

Check the cold rating, not just the weather rating

Every outdoor PTZ is sealed against rain and dust, but cold is a separate number: the operating temperature on the spec sheet. The 4-inch models we checked, such as the DS-2DE4A425IWG-E, are rated down to −30 °C. The 8-inch DarkFighter speed domes are rated down to −40 °C and include heaters. For the Prairies, the North or exposed sites in Quebec and Ontario, choose a model rated to −40 °C.

Larger domes also carry a wiper, which helps a lot with freezing rain and wet snow on the dome.

Plan the power

  • 4-inch models typically run on PoE+ (802.3at) from a standard PoE switch.
  • 8-inch models need more, for the heater and the long-range infrared: either 24 VAC or high-power PoE (802.3bt).

Add up the PoE budget on your switch before you order; heaters and infrared draw the most. See PoE switches.

Mount it solidly

At 25X or 42X zoom, a little wobble becomes a lot of shake. Use the matching wall, corner, pole or pendant mount, put it on a solid surface, and keep the sightlines clear of trees and signs.

Recording and control

Check that your recorder supports the camera, and budget the bandwidth for a high-resolution stream. For sites with an operator, a network keyboard with a joystick makes live control far easier than a mouse. And if finding footage later is the pain, an AcuSeek recorder lets you search by description: see Hikvision AcuSeek.

Frequently asked questions

What is a PTZ camera?

PTZ stands for pan, tilt and zoom. The camera turns left and right, tilts up and down, and zooms optically, so one unit can cover a large area and close in on details.

Is a PTZ better than a fixed camera?

They do different jobs. A fixed camera records the same view all the time, which suits doors and counters. A PTZ covers big open areas and zooms in on demand. Most sites are best served by both.

How far can a PTZ camera see?

It depends on the zoom and the night vision. A 4-inch, 25X model reaches about 50 m with infrared at night; an 8-inch, 42X DarkFighter model reaches 400 to 500 m. In daylight, optical zoom sets how much detail you get at distance.

Do PTZ cameras work in Canadian winters?

Yes, if you pick the right rating. Check the operating temperature on the spec sheet: many 4-inch models are rated to −30 °C, while 8-inch speed domes are rated to −40 °C and include heaters.

Can a PTZ camera follow people automatically?

Many can. Auto-tracking locks onto a person or vehicle and follows it across the scene. Check the spec sheet for the model you're considering.

What's the difference between a PT and a PTZ camera?

A PT camera pans and tilts but has no optical zoom. It's cheaper and fine for small spaces; for distance, you need the Z.

Do PTZ cameras need special power?

Smaller models run on PoE+ from a standard PoE switch. Large 8-inch models need 24 VAC or high-power PoE (802.3bt) for their heaters and infrared.

Can I control a PTZ with a joystick?

Yes. A network keyboard with a joystick gives operators smooth pan, tilt and zoom control, and quick access to presets.
